	Victoria, the queen	Julia Baird	★★★★☆	As someone who is fascinated with Victorian culture, I figured a good way to learn more about the period would be to read a biography of the most important woman of the time. The period's namesake, Queen Victoria. The book starts off with the race between King George III's sons to secure an heir to the throne. Ironic, because the sons had not produced a legitimate heir because they were too busy fooling around with mistresses. This is a stark contrast to the standard Queen Victoria would set when she married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg. They provided England the ideal model for what a strong British Family should look like. Their greatest achievement was the opening of the Great Exhibition, showcasing all the cutting-edge technological innovations of the time.	2026-07-15
	Ice skating	Karin Künzle-Watson	★★★☆☆	I'm not sure to what extent I can say I've 'read' this book. I can only do a handful of the techniques shown in the book, but I wanted to add it to my shelf nonetheless. As much as I'd like to believe it's possible to learn figure skating techniques from a book, most of what I have learned has come from advice given to me by more experienced skaters at the rink. </br> </br> The T-stop section, in particular, left me questioning whether the illustrations always convey proper technique. For example, in the figure showing how to do a proper T-Stop, the illustration shows the skater extending her arms forward as she is performing the stop. When trying to do the T-Stop as shown in the figure and description, an Olympic skater who frequents my rink generously gave me feedback on how to do it properly. She told me that the last thing a skater should do is extend their arms out while performing a T-Stop, because they could easily fall backward and hurt their head. She told me to instead place my hands on my hips to keep my body centered, and to engage my core. Because of her advice, my T-Stop instantly improved! </br> </br> If you want to learn how to skate, you're better off going to the rink and learning from people more experienced than you.	2026-07-09

Each topic is summarized briefly, however it lays the foundations for readers to delve into the areas of history they found most interesting in the book. 	The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II	Iris Chang	★★★★★	Before I read this book, I knew little about the Rape of Nanking, aside from it being a massacre committed by the Japanese during World War Two. This book vividly explained the sheer scale and depravity of this massacre. I now know of the Safety Zones, established and protected by heroic Westerners, and the sacrifices they made to save thousands of Chinese civilians. If you're unfamiliar with this tragedy, or know little details, I encourage you to read this book so that the stories of hundreds of thousands of victims will not be forgotten.	2024-09-09
